Deschamps who born in Neuchatel, Switzerland, and came to Australia in 1854 with his two oldest sons. He was known to Charles La Trobe, who at the time was Lt. Governor of Victoria. Deschamps had been manager of a large vineyard in Neuchatel and also had a small vineyard of his own. On arrival in Australia he and his sons were accommodated by La Trobe at his Jolimont home. The third son arrived with his mother in 1856. In 1860 at the first Lilydale land sales, Deschamps bought 90 acres of land. ...
